Non-destructive digging, or NDD, exposes buried services without an excavator bucket, auger or hand tool making contact. Water or compressed air loosens the ground, a vacuum lifts it away, and the service is left in view to be measured, recorded and protected. You will also see it described as non-destructive excavation.
In Sydney, a service strike rarely stops just one crew. Inside live infrastructure corridors it can halt several trades, close a lane and trigger an emergency repair, which is why NDD is built into the sequence of projects that dig near services.

In the western Sydney growth areas, services are often newly installed. NDD confirms their as-constructed depth and position before the next trade connects, before a road is sealed over them or before a footing is poured beside them.
In established suburbs the task is the reverse. Older assets have to be found and exposed where the record is uncertain, and there may be services from several eras sharing one corridor. Potholing is how that uncertainty is removed before design or construction.
